Dear Parents,
Happy end of Week 4! We had a wonderful and busy week in class. With several new friends joining our classroom family, we spent time conducting 1-on-1 math and phonics assessments. While individual assessments took place, the rest of the class practiced independence by rotating through learning stations, including shapes, fine motor skills, handwriting, math games, and number writing.
What We Learned This Week
Math: Practiced writing and building numbers up to 100, focusing on writing numbers facing the correct way rather than reversed.
Phonics & Handwriting: Reviewed proper pencil grip and fine-tuned letter formation.
Unit of Study (“All About Us”): Explored similarities and differences, celebrated our unique families, practiced global greetings, and learned to identify emotions along with calm-down strategies. Through drawings and reflections, students built empathy and open-mindedness while discovering how we all belong together.
Activities to Try at Home
Math (Counting & Numbers):
Count everyday household items together up to 100 (Lego bricks, pasta pieces, or steps taken on a walk).
Practice writing numbers on paper, in sand, or with sidewalk chalk, checking together to make sure numbers are facing the correct direction and not written backwards (such as making sure 3, 5, or 7 face the right way!).
Play a number detective game where your child identifies 2-digit numbers on house doors, clocks, or food packages.
Phonics & Handwriting:
Encourage your child to practice letter formation by writing friendly notes, simple cards, or daily to-do lists for family members.
Have your child draw pictures and write short labeled captions for what they created.
Try fine-motor strengthening activities such as using playdough, cutting paper with safety scissors, or threading beads onto string.
Unit of Study (“All About Us”):
Perform a daily emotion “zone” check-in (Blue, Green, Yellow, Red) during dinner or bedtime. Ask your child how they are feeling and why.
Practice calm-down strategies together, such as taking three deep belly breaths, counting slowly to ten, or taking a short quiet break.
Talk about your family background and share how your family shows care for one another.
Important Reminders
Monday Swimming (11:40 AM – 12:20 PM): Send your child to school in regular uniform. Pack their swimsuit, towel, swim cap, goggles, flip-flops, and wet bag inside a separate, clearly labeled bag.
Tuesday Library (9:20 AM – 10:00 AM): Send a large, labeled tote or bag so your child can bring their checked-out books home safely.
Classroom Supplies: Ensure your child brings a labeled reusable water bottle and headphones with a standard 3.5mm jack plug (no Bluetooth/wireless).
Healthy Snacks & Lunch: Pack snacks and lunch in separate labeled containers/bags, and remind your child to save lunch items for lunchtime. Please help us promote healthy energy for learning by sending nourishing options (fruits, vegetables, sandwiches, yogurt) and saving treats like chocolate or spicy chips for home.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support!
Warmly,
Ms. Flora
