It was lovely to meet so many of you during our Meet the Teacher Evening! We had a great time sharing what our year ahead looks like and continuing to build our school-home partnership. We understand that not everyone was able to make it, so you can find the information shared here. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out.
This week, we continued to build our classroom community and establish our routines. Both classes took the time to work together to create our Essential Agreements. These came directly from the students, giving them voice and ownership over how we want our Grade 5 community to learn and work together.
We also began our first Unit of Inquiry, Who We Are, with a role-play provocation where Miss Megan and Mr. G both had a difficult time controlling their feelings. This led to a discussion about what caused the conflict, what we could have done differently, and, most importantly, the impact our feelings and behaviours can have on our learning. We then continued exploring feelings through music and colour. In literacy, students wrote about a small moment from their lives as an introduction to personal narratives. We discussed what makes a personal narrative and began brainstorming different small moments we might want to share. In maths, we explored place value in different ways, focusing on why place value is important and how the position of a digit changes its value. Students used different manipulatives, such as base-ten blocks, to build and represent numbers.
You can find more photos from the week here.
Looking Ahead
Next week, we will continue to explore how our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are connected. In literacy, we will look at how our five senses can help us add detail to our personal narratives so that our readers can feel as though they are experiencing the moment alongside us. In maths, students will continue exploring place value, specifically focusing on comparing and reading numbers to the millions place.
We hope you have a wonderful weekend!
Warm regards,
Miss Megan & Mr. G
