We started off our week with online learning due to the rain. We were impressed with the resilience of our Grade 5 students and how they were able to navigate through their online learning. Thank you for your flexibility and support with this.

We continued exploring our sharing the planet unit by focusing on real vs. fake news, and how we might be able to check if posts are true. We also talked about our responsibility when it comes to posting online. Students explored their rights and responsibilities online. In maths we continued with fractions and our operations, focusing on adding mixed numbers as well as dividing unit fractions by a whole number.

We celebrated maths week at school, where Grade 5 went to play maths games hosted by Grade 4! It was fun to learn many new games and to keep up with our math skills. Students also got the opportunity to guess how many objects were in the jar during their lunch breaks. To wrap up maths week, we had an assembly Thursday afternoon with a rock-paper-scissors competition – all about probability and chance!

Important upcoming dates:

Next week students will begin preparing to start their own inquiries into a concept related to digital citizenship. In maths, we will continue working with fractions, including learning how to divide a whole number by a fraction and beginning to explore the connections between fractions, decimals, and percentages. In literacy, we will take a deeper look at narrative writing and how we can use what we are learning in our Unit of Inquiry to create realistic narrative stories.

Please help remind your child that they need to bring a hat for break times, a reusable water bottle and their iPad fully charged every day! We appreciate your support.

Best wishes, Miss Megan & Mr. G
