Students have officially started the Unit of Inquiry Sharing the Planet. We began with a pre-assessment where students chose one of the five focused ecosystems which include forest, desert, polar, arctic, and aquatic. After choosing they drew plants and animals from that ecosystem. Students then labeled these plants and animals the best they could. And they were given the challenge to create a food chain from the plants and animals they chose. Students also completed, in pairs, a Freyer Model on the five ecosystems. To conclude the UOI weekly activities, the students worked in groups to analyze the words of the Transdisciplinary Theme, Sharing the Planet. These themes will be repeated through their primary experience and I believe it is important to try to understand these BIG WORDS being used. Students each chose a word to define and then they wrote one question each. Please look at the pictures shared in the link above.
In English we completed our second whole class writing recount about the student performances. Next week the students will pick another topic and I will put students in groups to write a recount together. I will be monitoring them throughout the process while also supplying sentence stems to keep them on track. In phonics we have reviewed suffixes and plurals. The suffixes include -ed and -ing. The plural suffixes include -s, -es, and -ies. The students will focus on vowel teams next week during our phonics lessons.
In maths this week the focus really has been on time. Students reviewed o’clock and half past. They are required to also understand quarter past and quarter to as well as counting the five minute intervals. They should be aware that if the minute hand is facing one of the numbers 1-12 on the clock it is a 5 minute interval. Students must know how to skip count in 5’s up to 55. Please ask them if they can and to count for you. We will continue working on time as well as reviewing addition and subtraction in the hundred place value.
