This week, in connection with our Unit of Inquiry, we have been thinking about how plants and trees are important resources here on Earth. We began by revisiting the palm tree, as the children had previously learned about its uses during Oman Week. This time, our focus was specifically on how the leaves of the palm tree can be used.
The children noticed that palm branches are sometimes used as natural brooms for sweeping outdoor areas. We then looked at photographs and watched a short video showing how palm leaves can be woven to make baskets, bags and mats. Inspired by this, the children were invited to try weaving small mats using palm leaves collected from our own palm trees on campus. As braiding the leaves by hand would have been quite fiddly, we used a simple weaving frame, with the children taking turns to add to each mat. This activity not only provided a practical example of how we use this important natural resource, but also offered a valuable opportunity to develop coordination and fine motor skills, as threading the leaves over and under the strings of the loom was quite challenging for little fingers. You can see photographs below of the children fully engaged in this experience.
Later in the week, we returned to the topic of plants and explored other ways we use them, with a particular focus on edible plants—especially fruit. Together, we brainstormed the many fruits we enjoy eating. Each child then helped to peel and/or cut fruit to contribute to a large fruit salad, which they shared together at lunchtime.
We wish you all an enjoyable three-day weekend and look forward to welcoming the children back on Sunday.
Kind regards,
The KG1 Team
