Happy Ramadan to all and especially those celebrating. This week we began by concluding our How We Express Ourselves unit by completing a reflection of our performances and understanding of the creative process. Today the students have completed a pre-assessment about their new Unit of Inquiry, Sharing the Planet. It consisted of the students choosing one of five ecosystems, drawing plants and animals that belong in that ecosystem, labeling the plants and animals, and showing a food chain within that ecosystem using those plants and animals. Next week we will begin researching the five chosen ecosystems; aquatics, desert, polar, forest and savanna. Students will choose their ecosystem and an animal they would like to learn more about from that ecosystem.

In English we completed three out of the five paragraphs of writing a recount about our presentations that took place last week. We will complete the essay on Sunday. We will then continue working on writing recount essays by choosing another topic and writing it together. The goal is to write four recounts together in the class. I will then have the students practice by writing their own.

In math the students were introduced to time in the class. In Grade 1 they looked at o’clock. This year they will focus on quarter after, half past, quarter to, am and pm, and all time intervals of five minutes. It has come to my attention that some students are struggling with counting in fives. Please practice with your children, so they are confident and comfortable in the classroom. We will continue next week with time and adding and subtracting numbers in the hundreds.
