Fruit and Vegetable Market

On Sunday the students went on a field trip to the fruit and vegetable market. We walked around the wholesale area asking the salesmen where the fruit came from. The results were Oman, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, China, Yemen, South Africa, Philippines, and Bangladesh. We then went to the market building where the students bought fruit for their fruit salads. We returned to school and went to the LC2 kitchen upstairs. In their chosen groups the students made a fruit salad using knives that do not cut through the students’ skin. The students then took their fruit salads back to LC1 and ate them in the lunch area.

Sangar Park

On Wednesday the students went on a second field trip to Sangar Park. We arrived around 8:45 am where they went directly to the playground. Around 9:30 am they began exploring the beach and the waters edge. Some students got wet and others did not. A large group of students created a water habitat for the hermit crabs they were discovering in the water and sand. It definitely kept them busy. We enjoyed our break time snacks under the gazebo and returned to school for lunch.

For our Unit of Inquiry, How We Express Ourselves the students are practicing their Readers Theatre plays. All scripts have been shared with you on Seesaw for the students to practice at home. All four groups have completed their background scenery. They are still working on their props. Two groups were able to bring their props to art class on Tuesday to paint them. Next week Wednesday we are expected to perform in front of another class. Please support your child by having them practice their script at home. The more confident they are will allow them to be more comfortable performing in front of others.

In English this week we completed a written recount as a whole class. After returning from Sangar Park they completed a graphic organizer about their trip. On Sunday the students will complete a written assessment about their trip to Sangar Park. A written recount includes when, where, who, and what. The organization of the paragraph includes the words first, then, next, and finally.

In math we looked at adding and subtracting as the reciprocal of one another. We also call these fact families. A simple example of this is 1 + 2 = 3 and 3 – 2 = 1. The students need to understand they can use this strategy to check their work. The top three manipulatives the students are now using are place value disks, base ten blocks and their fingers. I do have a group of students who are able to add and subtract in their heads without the use of manipulatives.
