This week we have continued exploring how we can express ourselves through different types of performances: dance, music, puppetry, theatre, poetry, drawing or painting, etc. We have discussed what can inspire us, including using our imagination to help us express our feelings. We shared the types of performances we have seen and/or been a participant of, such as our Winter Concert or Talent Show. Some of our students play instruments, while others enjoy singing or dancing. We have discussed the central idea and the lines of inquiry, in particular, the creative process. Please see below:

Creative process

On Seesaw I have posted a home learning activity (a puppet show) which your child can complete independently. We would love to see how your expresses their imagination and creativity through the use of their toys.

For literacy this week we have met in small reading groups and I have also continued with the reading assessments. Our reading strategy has been focused on activating our prior knowledge to build up our inferential skills.

We have continued with practising our handwriting formation by remembering to begin our letters and numbers from the top of the letter/number and using our best handwriting when we are making new words using rhyming patterns. We are practising using letter blends: l, r and s blends (sl, sn, st, dr, gr, bl, gl, fl, etc) in phonics learning.

We have had a writing assessment this week based on a recount of a recent experience. First we plan our recount using: when, who, where and what and then we organised our thoughts using time connectives: first, then, next and finally. This is always a challenge for the students as they must remember to write in complete sentences using a variety of punctuation, spell their words correctly and try to add descriptions to their writing.

Maths this week has revisited place value as we are beginning to work with three digit numbers and also the different subtraction strategies we can use to solve problems. We are learning how addition and subtraction are connected and how we can use these operations to check our work. A challenge this week for the students has been not only solving for an unknown result, but also how to show they know that’s the correct result. They have show their work using base ten blocks, number lines or using place value arrow cards.

Next week will be busy with many different activities to celebrate Oman Week. We will see camels, participate in craft work, and henna our hands. Included in this week is also our field trip to Sohar Fort and the old souq.
