In maths this week we have worked through a comprehensive maths assessment for diagnostic purposes. The results tell us what your child understands and how they can apply their learning to different problems. We worked on solving a story problem by identifying the quantities and units, then figuring out which operation we should use and looked at the strategy of ‘chunking’ (adding tens, then ones, adding to the next ten, etc) to solve the problem. We worked on understanding that when adding two-digit numbers, we can decompose the numbers into tens and ones, add the tens to the tens and the ones to the ones, and recompose the numbers.

In UOI this week we have been working on our research report about homes around the world. In the research report packet, we are answering questions about the materials used to build a home in a particular biome, how a family with keep warm or cool, how they will get and store water and food, as well as which materials they used to build their model home. Once that part is complete, the students move on to the method of building their home by writing a recount.

In literacy this week we have been focusing on learning about past tense verbs, both regular (stepped) and irregular (slept). We have been reviewing the features of a recount and how time connectives (first, next, then, finally) move our writing along a time order sequence. The students listened to a story (recount), then organised pictures from the book with the time connectives, before writing their own version of the recount, remembering to use past tense verbs.

We have continued with guided reading sessions, this week focusing on using sight words or high-frequency words when we read to build our fluency. Phonics and spelling patters have been written and recognised and we continue to work on developing a neat and correctly written handwriting style.

Please see below a couple of reading strategies we have been working on throughout the month of November:

  • Extra Clothes: Students should bring an extra set of clothes or a shirt, as some activities involve water games.

  • Water bottle

  • Sunscreen on in the morning

UOI:

  • finish up our research reports and method of building our model homes
  • self-assessment of the unit and reflection

Literacy:

  • using phonics and letter patterns to spell new words
  • guided and independent reading sessions
  • personal journal writing
  • recount writing

Maths:

  • using chunking to solve addition problems
  • model equations using a variety of resources (arrow number cards, number lines, Base ten blocks, etc)
