This week, we have been busy preparing for today’s Winter Concert. The children really enjoyed going up onto the big stage and looking out at a real audience. During the week, they practised performing in front of the KG2–G2 students and teachers, and also had chances to practise being a respectful and attentive audience when watching other grade levels. Today, they were very excited to share the songs they have been practising with Mr Mino with you, their families.

As part of our continued work with language related to direction and position, the children explored these ideas through a fun, active experience. We set up a simple indoor obstacle course and encouraged each child to follow instructions such as going over, under, through, and around. You could easily try something similar at home using chairs, cushions, blankets, or tables. Using the same directional and positional language in your home language would be just as helpful.

Today’s photographs show the children creating Clarice Cliff–inspired plates. Together, we looked at pictures of the ceramic artist, who worked in the United Kingdom from the 1920s to the 1960s as well as pictures of some of her pieces. Clarice Cliff used bright colours and bold shapes to decorate plates, bowls, cups, and other ceramics, and she believed that colour “radiates happiness.” Rather than ceramic plates, we used palm-leaf plates, but chose similarly vibrant colours such as oranges, yellows, and reds. The children used shaped sponges to print their designs, and we hope their plates also “radiate happiness” through their colours and shapes.

Wishing everyone a good weekend,

The KG1 Team
