We celebrated Oman’s National Day with a special assembly this morning. The whole school gathered to enjoy some special performances by students from across the school, celebrating Oman and Omani culture. We would like to take this opportunity to wish our Omani KG1 students and families a very happy National Day!

This week, in connection with our unit of inquiry, we introduced the children to the artist Wassily Kandinsky. Kandinsky was one of the pioneers of abstract art and believed that colours and shapes could be used to express emotions and inner feelings. We began by looking at a photograph and a portrait of the artist himself, before exploring two examples of his early, more representational work. We then showed the children a couple of his later paintings, which were abstract and full of bold colours and shapes. We focused on one painting in particular—Color Study with Concentric Circles. Although now very well known, this artwork was originally created as a colour study in which Kandinsky experimented with different colour combinations. The children were then invited to create their own versions of this piece. Today, we revisited some of Kandinsky’s work and, using everyday objects such as cups and pieces of card to print with, the children began to create their own Kandinsky-inspired abstract paintings containing circles and straight lines. We will continue with the printing next week! You can see some of this beautiful artwork in our classroom. The photographs below show the children working on their own ‘concentric circles’ artwork.

This week we also began to look at patterns as part of our mathematics curriculum. We read nonfiction books about pattern, created patterns together, and also invited the children to identify and then complete repeating patterns themselves, before attempting to create their own simple patterns using coloured pegs.

Wishing everyone a good weekend,

The KG1 Team
