Weekly Photos Here
This week’s UOI was a busy one. Students were introduced to materials such as wood, straw, and bricks from the story, ‘The Three Little Billy Goats’. This provocation led them into looking at what materials we use to build houses. Our central idea is, ‘People have different types of homes around the world for certain reasons’. Students looked at ways homes meet our needs and wants by creating a list of what we need in our home and what we would want in our home. They watched videos of homes around the world and of children’s bedrooms. Students are continuing this theme in their art class with Miss Sanna.
In English this week students completed guided reading centers, which are focused on their reading levels. We will continue this weekly so students have the opportunity to read aloud with their peers and their teachers. In phonics this week vowel teams ai and ay were introduced. These vowel teams make the long a sound. Vowel teams are two vowels together that make just one sound. They practiced their sentence skills with colorful semantics during center time. As always we continue every morning with a language review.
For math, students did lots of measuring. They measured body parts and items in the classroom. They worked with partners on a Seesaw activity. Students have been practicing days and months of the year. They will need to know how to spell them correctly by the end of this unit. One week we will have a spelling test on the days of the week and another week we will have a spelling test on the months of the year.
Next week in UOI students will continue looking at houses around the world. They will also look at the biomes that these houses are located in. The biomes include grassland, hot desert, cold desert, temperate forest, rainforest, savannah, tundra, and taiga. Houses located in these biomes are log homes, stilt houses, adobe homes, yurts, brick homes, homes made of wood, and rondavels. They will be building homes in a group in their art class with Miss Sanna. Research Will be completed in our class. please send pictures of your homes or homes you vacation at, so we can use those as examples in the classroom.
In English we will continue guided reading in our centers, writing with colorful semantics, and many other English centered activities. For phonics we will review r-controlled sounds and be introduced to more vowel teams. It is very important that students continue reading English books for 20 minutes every night.
For math we will continue with measurement in centimeters and introduce millimeters. Students will look at yesterday and tomorrow, when working on days of the week. Students will learn and practice the order of the months of the year. They will become familiar with the terms last month and next month. We will review place value and number bonds.
Please send pictures of homes around the world. this will make the concept of materials used for homes more accessible for our students.
