Welcome back, Roblox families!
I hope you all had a restful break and are ready for another fun few weeks of learning with your children.

We began the week preparing for our Three Way Conferences, and it was such a pleasure to meet so many of you in person. Thank you for taking the time to come in and share in your child’s learning journey, celebrating their highlights and discussing the goals they want to keep working on throughout the year. It is always so special to see how proud they are to talk about their progress and growth.

It has been another busy and exciting week in The Roblox classroom!
Students made their final adjustments to their community projects, checking the rubric to make sure everything was included. We discussed how our communities can make people feel happy, healthy, and comfortable. On Wednesday, students presented their final projects to the class and completed their reflections on the unit. They have worked so hard and shown fantastic self management, communication, and social skills throughout this process. I am so proud of their effort and teamwork.

To wrap up our last unit, How We Organize Ourselves, we held a gallery walk, where students displayed their community spaces, shared their reflections, and assessed their own learning. It was a wonderful way to celebrate everyone’s creativity and progress.

We have now moved into our new Unit of Inquiry: Where We Are in Place and Time.
In this unit, students will explore how people around the world build different types of homes depending on the environment and available resources. We will be learning about the different environment (biomes), the materials found in each, and how people adapt to their surroundings to meet their needs.

If you or someone you know has experience designing or building homes, or can share insights about homes in different parts of the world, we would love to have you visit and speak to the class. Please let me know if you are interested, the students always enjoy learning from real life examples.

In Math, we have been working on number bonds and making our learning more challenging by using two-digit numbers. We are exploring how numbers can be broken apart and put together in different ways, using base ten blocks, counters, and number lines to show our thinking. For example, we can see that 47 is made up of 40 and 7, or that 47 can also be shown as 30 + 17. This helps us build a stronger understanding of number relationships and prepares us to add and subtract larger numbers with confidence.

On Sunday we will be exploring measurement, focusing on centimeters and using items such as paper clips, cubes and markers to measure classroom objects we will also be using rulers. Each morning we record the daily temperature in Sohar, and we will soon compare it to other places around the world, linking nicely with our new unit. Students have also started maths centres, which allow for more small group work and individualised support.

In English, we reviewed what makes a complete sentence, fixed sentences and practiced writing in our writing journals, and explored writing summaries. During guided reading, students were introduced to new books, both fiction and nonfiction, and learned to identify features of each.

Next week in phonics, we will explore glued sounds such as old, ild, ind, olt, and ost. These are special because they do not follow the usual short vowel rule. We will continue reviewing closed syllables and r controlled verbs, and in writing, we will focus on research skills, finding facts and summarising information in our own words.

In Math, we will keep building on place value while starting to learn and spell the days of the week and months of the year. We will practice these daily and have a short spelling check in the coming weeks. We will also continue with measurement, looking at metres and cm’s, and discussing the differences between the two.

In UOI, we will continue exploring our central idea:
“People have different types of homes around the world for specific reasons.”
Students will begin to think about what they already know and what they want to find out about homes and biomes. Later, they will work collaboratively in Art to design and build model homes using materials that represent their assigned biome. I am really looking forward to seeing their creativity come to life.

It has been a fantastic start to the term. Students have come back full of energy and enthusiasm, ready to learn and explore. I could not be prouder of how far they have come already.

As promised, please find the UOI 3 Flyer: Where We Are in Place and Time attached below.

Warm wishes,
Ms Cami
