Dear Parents,

Another action pack week has flown by in G6. What a busy and fun first 9 weeks of the year. So much learning, so much thinking and so much growth in our community. The students now deserve a nice rest to charge their batteries before we go again in November and start the Exhibition process.

This week we have started our new Sharing the Planet unit of inquiry. This unit will begin before the Exhibition (and hopefully serve to support that process) and then conclude after the Exhibition finishes in February. As a provocation, the students were given a script where there is some conflict, they then looked at two scenarios – what actions could cause the conflict to escalate and what actions could cause the conflict to reach an amicable resolution. This was a great way for the students to learn how to extend a script, but also to consider the concept of perspective and to see a problem from different viewpoints. Plus, as you can see below, it is really fun to act out our scripts too and to perform in front of an audience.

In Maths we have been identifying equivalent fractions and learning to simplify fractions. As well as this, we have been finding rules for how to convert improper fractions to mixed number fractions (and reversed). See this week’s Seesaw for some examples.

In Literacy we have been developing our personal narratives with a particular focus on using speech marks accurately and using paragraphs appropriately to show when there is a new action, new setting, new time or new speaker.

Trip Update – We are now up to 31 students for the G6 camping trip and we will have the numbers to proceed. We urge those who are still undecided to really consider letting their child embrace this exciting experience.

Breast Cancer Awareness Day – thank you to those who dressed in pink on Tuesday and purchased food to raise money for this important charity. We believe in G6 that the students need to go beyond just dressing in a colour and buying food, so we have been learning more about cancer and discussing people we know who have been impacted by this terrible disease. We watched – link – and we encourage you to continue the conversation as a family.
