Good afternoon,

This week, after reading the traditional tale The Little Red Hen, we explored the idea that working together helps us achieve more. To put this into practice, the children were challenged to work in pairs, competing against another team to sort a pile of mixed-up toys into the correct baskets. The first pair to work together to clear up all their allocated toys was the winner! The game was great fun and reinforced the importance of cooperation. It also encouraged the children to think about the positive impact they can have on their shared environment—by taking responsibility for our classroom and resources, we can make a big difference together. You can see photographs of this activity below.

In mathematics this week, we continued to focus on recognising written numerals and counting objects to match them. The children got active with a game that involved running to the correct numbers scattered across the floor. With only three of each number available, the activity also encouraged sharing and cooperation, as the children made sure everyone had a chance to join in. We followed this with games of matching pairs (where children had to find matching numerals), as well as a fun counting activity where the children matched small pictures of cookies to large numbered cookie ‘plates’. These activities supported number recognition, counting accuracy, and social skills through play.

In literacy this week, we focused on nonfiction books, exploring texts that shared real facts about different animals. The children then became authors and illustrators, each creating a page about an animal of their choice. After conducting some research on child-friendly websites, they drew a picture of their chosen animal and, together with the teacher, selected interesting facts for the teacher to write down to accompany their illustration. Together, these pages will be compiled into our own class-made nonfiction book, which we will keep in the classroom for everyone to enjoy.

Many thanks to all those who have already signed up for a fifteen minutes slot to speak with me at the parent-teacher conferences on either Monday 3rd or Tuesday 4th November. If you have not yet done so, please open the Google Doc (shared with you at the beginning of this week) and sign up for this important chance to discuss how your child has settled in, and their progress so far.

We wish you a happy week of school holiday, and look forward to seeing the children again on Sunday, 2nd November.

Kind regards,

The KG1 Team
