What is art made of? For our Grade 9 MYP Visual Arts students, the answer goes far beyond paint and clay. In their latest project, they are investigating contemporary artists who use everything from millions of sunflower seeds and melting ice to their own blood to create powerful statements.

Students are learning to analyze these complex works by considering their Form (what it looks like), Theme (what it’s about), and Context (the world in which it was made). This framework helps them understand how an artist’s choice of material is crucial to the artwork’s message and impact.

Now, students are channeling this research into creating their own original pieces. The project challenges them to think critically, experiment boldly with materials, and understand that contemporary art is often about asking provocative questions. We look forward to sharing their thought-provoking creations with the school community soon!
