Another exciting week in classroom 2B. For our UOI we completed our Venn Diagrams with partners. Students worked together comparing the similarities and differences of the landscape inside of the ABIS walls and the landscape outside our walls. Students all agreed that both contained dirt, rocks, trees, and plants. They noticed there were no buildings, playgrounds, grass, or shade outside our walls. Inside our walls they wrote down a playground, big red (monkey bars), the donut, the maze, our farm, shade, grass, flowers, and so much more. Today I have shared our community groups with the students. The groups were created randomly by class dojo. Don’t worry everyone, the students will have an opportunity to pick their groups at some point. Remember I am looking at their ATL skills; social skills, self-management skills, and communication skills. Throughout the school year they will work with everyone. It is very important that the students learn to work collaboratively with each other.

In English this week we completed our Acrostic poems and they have been hung up outside the classroom. You are welcome to come take a look. Don’t worry, if you don’t get a chance to come then you will get to see them in their UOI book. We started writing our Haiku poems this week. The process was; 1. Write down 5 ideas, 2. Choose one idea, 3. Brainstorm words, 4. Count the syllables in each word, 5. Begin writing your Haiku, 6. Show the teacher when done. A Haiku has three lines. Line one has five syllables. Line two has seven syllables. Line three has five syllables. A Haiku is a Japanese poem focused on nature. In phonics students were introduced to r-controlled vowels ar and or, glued sounds -all, -an, and -am.

For Maths we have been working on 2D shapes and their properties. How many sides does the shape have? How many corners does the shape have? Are the sides straight or curved? We practiced greater than, less than, and equal to. What number is bigger? What number is smaller? Place value is the beginning of number knowledge and it is important they have a good understanding.

Next week we will begin working on our communities. Students will have the choice of creating a 2D map of their community, or a 3D community. Please ask them what their group has chosen. If they have chosen a 3D map then you may help them by getting trees, bushes, and items they can add to their map.

In English we will continue working on our Haiku poems. Once they have completed them correctly they will put them on A3 paper along with a drawing that represents their poem. For phonics we will practice glued sounds, digraphs, and r-controlled vowels.

For Maths the students will be looking at 2D shapes, maps, and addition.
