Dear Parents,
An inspiring week in Grade 6 as we properly launch our new unit of inquiry with provocations and lots of wonderings. Ask your child about our provocation and if they were in group A or B in our forced migration, and what they experienced. We began investigating reasons for human and animal migration this week. We began considering factors for migration and evaluating the associated risks, opportunities, and challenges.
In maths this week, we are making excellent progress with our stand alone ‘number sense’ mathematical unit where we began reviewing mental and written strategies for adding and subtracting.
We are nearing the end of our literacy unit about constructing quality sentences. Students are beginning to put together their understanding of conjunctions, appositives and figurative language to create an ‘I am’ paragraph which paints a picture of who they are. Keep a look out in Seesaw for a snapshot of their brainstorm.
In Seesaw this week, you will find…
- Examples of student addition and subtraction technique, as well as how they apply this knowledge
- Plans / drafts of their ‘I am…’ paragraphs (hopefully) using figurative language, conjunctions, appositives and other tools to extend sentences to create a powerful picture in the reader’s mind.
- Migration stories – your child analysing one of the teacher guests we had this week sharing their own migration story.
Please find below photos from our ‘See, Think, Wonder’ provocation of images, data and photos of migration from around the world. This is used to broaden the student’s thinking and to start to see migration from multiple perspectives. This is a really important idea that will form the basis of this unit.
