Parents please encourage your children to read 20 minutes of English each school day. This is very important as it will help with their reading journeys. Reading Journals are collected on Thursdays and given back on the following school day. 50% of the class is participating and I encourage all to complete the Reading Journals.
Time is flying and we are having fun learning in classroom 2B. This week in English we completed our first recount writing assessment. This assessment will be completed a total of three times this school year, after the winter holiday and in May. This is a great opportunity for the students and parents to witness their writing growth. We have been busy focussing on capitalization, punctuation, and plural nouns. They have looked at suffixes -s, and -es. I introduced Colorful Semantics to the students. This is a sentence writing strategy that I will be using in the classroom. Please Google the name if you are curious. Don’t forget to talk to your child about what they are learning in their classroom!
For math the students looked at place value using place value disks. First, we focused on ones, tens, and hundreds. After a few problems, we stepped it up and looked at ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands. Students used their skip counting knowledge using 10’s and 100’s all the way up to a 1000.
In our Unit of Inquiry the students have completed their culture collages in their UOI Journals. Next week the students will be paired with a student from another country. They will use their culture collages to complete a venn diagram comparing and contrasting the two cultures. They should be able to identify that they speak different languages, but they both speak a language. They should be able to identify they both have a flag to represent where they come from, but they look different. And the list goes on……..
Next week we will continue to work on our writing skills focusing on capitalization, punctuation, finger spacing, and handwriting skills. I will continue using Colorful Semantics to teach the students how to write complete sentences. Our grammar focus is nouns and plural nouns at the moment and will continue into next week.
For math we will continue looking at bar graphs, place value, and number sense. Students will be using hands-on activities such as the place value disks, place value mats, and manipulatives.
