What a fun, engaging and exciting first week in Grade 6. It has been amazing to connect with and learn about your children. As a Grade 6 team we are delighted at how the week has gone. We are very much looking forward to an exciting year of inquiry and growth.
Seesaw – In this week’s Seesaw you will find a selection of some of what we have done this week. This includes our Zombie Math Challenge, the first stages (planning, pre-writing and revising) of our ‘Happiness is…’ poems and a small ‘two stars and a wish’ reflection of the first few days.
This Week’s Learning:
Maths – We have begun our first maths unit of the year based on number sense. The central idea is ‘Understanding the power of numbers enables us to make informed decisions and solve real-life challenges.’ The week began with a full on real life multi-step bridge challenge (see seesaw), as well as this we have learnt a new place value game and have done an overview assessment to start to understand each student’s mathematical profile.
Literacy – Our first literacy unit of the year has also started with a central idea of ‘Effective communication through reading and writing enhances our understanding of diverse texts and their audiences’. We have been looking at descriptive writing and how to extend a sentence and to create an image in the reader’s mind. See this week’s Seesaw for more information.
UOI – For our year long ‘How We Organise Ourselves’ unit our central idea is ‘Many factors cause us to grow as individuals and as a community.’ The following questions have been explored this week and may be fun dinner time conversations perhaps for your family. What is happiness? How do we measure happiness? How can we become happier? What does happiness feel and look like?
