Thank you to all the parents who were able to attend our Open Day. I hope you found the brief look into our reading programme insightful and you enjoyed the opportunity to spend time with your child observing their reading behaviours.

This week, we have focused on our procedural writing, choosing a fun topic to instruct others about. We have been using the features of procedural writing, checking our work against a provided rubric and ensuring our use of correct spelling, grammar and punctuation. We have been able to spend time reading independently, as well as, within our guided reading groups. Our phonics this week focused on the vowel patterns: ipe, ise, ire and ine. We have also read sentences and thought about which words fit by using context.

We also had our end-of-year writing assessment based on a recount of a recent event in our lives. And I have been able to complete each of the students’ reading assessment. I’m very proud of the effort students have put into their reading this past year and I hope they continue to enjoy learning more about the world through reading, as well as their personal experiences.

During maths, this week we have been continuing to learn about time using analogue clocks. The students have a good understanding of ‘o’clock and the half-hour’, and are now learning about the 5 minute increments on a clock. We have related this to skip counting by 5 and also to the fraction of half and quarter. Please practise telling time with your child at home – using analogue clocks, rather than digital ones.

Our UOI has concentrated on the designing and planning of our complex machine. The students have formed into small teams or are working individually to create a plan of their machine. A complex machine consists of using at least two simple machines to solve a problem. Our problem is on how to move an object. Please see some of the plans in the photos below.

Next week, in literacy we will meet in in our guided reading groups and continue to expand our vocabulary and learn how to spell words through our phonics programme. We will practise our how-to writing by finishing up our fun instructions and also checking our complex machine steps to our actual machines.

Our maths will continue focusing on learning the concepts of time, practising telling time and, of course continuing to develop our mental maths skills.

Building our complex machines will be the focus of our UOI and comparing our end product to the provided rubric.

Please see the information below from Grade 3:

ABIS Summer Book Fair 2025

Summer Reading Challenge

Please see the attached offer from Epic. This is an option for summer reading if you are interested in getting this for your children. We use Epic in class a lot; the students love reading on Epic because the books are authentic, offer a breadth of topics (fiction and non-fiction) and provide both read aloud books and books to be read independently. As you know, one of my passions is reading and I believe I have passed this on to many students in Grade 2. Continued summer reading will continue to support your child’s use and understanding of English and prepare them for the challenges of Grade 3.
