This week the students enjoyed building their complex machines. We have completed building for the year. They have enjoyed the Unit of Inquiry so much. They have asked me to continue next week, but as we know all things come to an end. Next week the students will present their machines by answering five questions. 1. What did you build? 2. What two simple machines did you use for your build? 3. How does this machine make work easier for people? 4. Did you follow your steps or did you have to change them? Why? If the build is not completed, they will have to answer the fifth question. 5. What went wrong and why? Next week we will wrap up, How the World Works. We will have a group puzzle competition. Students will complete a whole class Frayer Model with the words energy, work, push, pull, friction, and force. We will focus on the question, how do simple machines make work easier. Students will understand that simple machines increase our energy output to complete tasks easier.
In English the students completed writing their step-by-step directions for their complex machines build. In phonics we reviewed the suffixes we have learned; -er, -est, -s, -es, -ies, -ed, and -ing. We continued learning about our new suffixes and what they mean; -ful, -ment, -ness, -less, -ish, and -able. Together we went over the meaning and chose how to represent it on the whiteboard in front of the class. Hopefully with access to the meanings, the students will carry the knowledge over to third grade. We will begin looking at how stories help us express ourselves. Students will partake in readers theatre where they will act out familiar short stories. Narrative writing will be the focus until the end of the school year.
In math we concluded our introduction to fractions. Students should be able to identify whole, half, and quarter. We played games, completed Seesaw activities, and watched a few videos to get an understanding of what fractions are and how we represent them. Next week the students will review clocks and practice reading and writing time for the next two weeks. The last week of school we will focus on equal groups and I will introduce multiplication using visuals.
