A VERY busy week in Grade 6 (as ever). Probably the highlight was visiting Sohar Aluminium and learning about the different forms of energy transfers. As well as having a great time and being treated wonderfully by our hosts, we also learnt lots of new information not covered in our How the World works unit of inquiry, specifically pneumonic and hydraulic forms of energy. Fascinating stuff and hopefully some of the students may have been inspired to consider becoming engineers in the future….
Mathematics – we have started our patterns, sequences and algebra stand alone unit. We did pre-assessments and then started to look at strategies for identifying patterns and rules – both 1 and 2 step patterns.
Literacy – as well as continuing to unpack the features of persuasive writing, Harry potter fever continues to spread across Grade 6 as we race through the early chapters of ‘The Philosopher’s Stone’. It so nice to be able to access the same text as a whole grade and to really enjoy the text, making up voices, discussing the plot and building up the tension as Harry’s epic journey progresses.
Unit of Inquiry – Using the R-A-F-T acronym to prepare us for the end of Primary school. This week we looked at ‘R’ and reconciliations. How saying sorry and forgiving others can help unburden ourselves and allow us to move on freely to the next chapter of our lives. For many of the students (and the teacher) this was a very powerful and reflective activity.
Next Week (some of the activities / engagements will include…)
Mathematics – continuing our patterns and sequences unit of inquiry
Literacy – identifying the topic for our Ted Talks and beginning to draft the hook and opening statements of our speeches.
Unit of Inquiry – Focusing on the ‘A’ in R-A-F-T and looking at affirmations. Who has helped us on our primary journey? How can we thank them and show our appreciation?
BIGGEST DAY OF THE YEAR – Grade 6 Graduation – TUESDAY 10th June 8.15am – 9am in the Mazoon. This will be a very special event that we really want everyone to attend. It will include a musical performance, memories from Primary school, some Ted Talks, Graduation certificates being given out and lots of awesome memorable moments. So please do whatever you can to ensure that you can attend.
Have a great weekend,
Matt
