Weekly Photos Here
Our first simple machines projected has been completed. Please look at the photos of the students working on building their machines. We have two rollercoasters, two mazes, two ferris wheels, and two playgrounds. The project. should contain at least one simple machine such as an inclined plane, wedge, wheel and axle, pulley, screw, or a lever. Some projects contain more than one. Next week the students will begin their procedural writing activity, giving their step-by-step instructions on how they built their simple machine. Next week they will choose their own groups to plan a complex machine build. Groups can be up to three people. The complex machine must have two or more simple machines and it must be something that helps people. The build will begin on May 18 and will conclude on May 22. I am excited to see what creative machines they come up with. Please discuss this with your children and help them with possible ideas.
In English we have learned about all the vowel teams, so now we will be reviewing them until the end of the year. We are looking at compound words and multisyllabic words. In 6 + 1 Traits of Writing we will continue with organization of ideas and details. This is helping students with their procedural writing. Students will complete their writing task for the Unit of Inquiry next week. We are continuing to read informational text about simple machines. I encourage you to have your children login to EPIC at home and go through the simple machines library.
In math we have completed our unit on subtraction. Next week the students will be introduced to fractions. We will be focusing on whole, half, and quarters. We will use pictures, manipulatives, and numbers. I always encourage parents to practice with their children at home. So, if you want to show your child fractions this weekend that would be great.
We have started the reading assessments and will continue next week. Please practice at home with your child to give them the best advantage as possible.
