A short, but VERY busy week in Grade 6 as many of our units reach the final stages.
This Week
We have been completing our How the World Works unit of inquiry. As a final activity (and as a way for the students to apply and show their new learning) the students have been analysing a section of a Rube Goldberg machine and adding their own commentary to the video to show:
- the difference between potential and kinetic energy
- how energy can be transformed into different forms
- the law of conservation of energy
- dissipation of energy
The students then self-assessed using the 4 point rubric below and reflected on the process. See this week’s Seesaw for more information.
As the culmination for our literacy units on explanations, the students each chose a natural phenomenon that they could research, plan and then create an explanation text using the correct features and conventions for this genre of writing. The students then reflected on their efforts and published piece of writing by using this 3 point rubric (below). This allows the student to see areas of strength, as well as areas for future development. This is available on Seesaw.
Next Week
Mathematics
- Applying the skills from our stand alone measurement unit into real life situations and multi-step worded problems
Units of Inquiry
- Provocations and unpacking our new How the World Works unit of inquiry about what our Primary school legacies will be and how we start to organise our transition into Secondary school
Literacy
- Beginning to analyse and unpack persuasive texts to create a series of rules that we can apply to our end of year speeches.
IMPORTANT DATE
Grade 6 Graduation – Tuesday, June 10th – 8.15am – 9am. PLEASE ensure that you are free and available for this very important culminating event for the Grade 6 students. It will be a very special morning and it would be amazing if all the children have family members there to celebrate, reminisce and look forward with them.
Have a great long weekend,
Matt
