We have started to review and reflect on our understanding of the Learner Profile. We had a discussion about our understanding so far as we have been learning many new, difficult words and new concepts this year.

Students told me that a learner is someone who learns to do new things or tries new things. A learner knows how to read a little bit or writes some words and does adding. A learner should be listening and working hard and doing their best, they added! They were not sure if all learners were the same but thought that they might do SOME things the same way.

We looked at 3 attributes in detail: caring, communicator and thinker. They agreed that we understood what caring looks like and that there are different ways to be caring. We had a longer talk about communicator as this is a big word and is not just talking. We know we can tell stories but we are also learning to write so we can communicate our stories to others. Students then had to guess from the teacher’s expressions how she was feeling and realised we communicate non- verbally too. Then we had to guess from signs or gestures and we knew ‘Hello” and thumbs up or to sit or to be quiet. Thinker was very hard but some said it happens in our head or our mind or our brain.

Students wrote and drew about their understanding and their definitions of these attributes which reveal how much they have developed in their understanding and language since the start of the year. I hope you enjoy looking at their work!
