First week back after Eid and spirits have been very high! We have entered a brand new unit of inquiry exploring the central idea that: digital technology allows us to capture, interpret, and communicate ideas about the world in different ways. Students have been exploring how communication and sharing of art has changed throughout the years, and have become photographers this week, while learning about how composition can change the way the viewer sees the subject. In Literacy our reading groups are back up and running exploring many aspects of literacy skills, and students have been learning about artist statements to share what the artist’s inspirations and intent were when creating pieces to share to a wider audience. In Maths students were reminded about/introduced to fractions with a ‘show what you know’ assessment, before inquiring into exactly what fractions are, and where we use them in real life. They made some fraction models, and found out that some of the models could be compared to other fractions e.g. one third is equal to two sixths. They spent some time learning all about fractions vocabulary through creating Frayer Models. The week finished by gathering some data about Grade 5 which will be used to help students understand simplifying fractions next week.
A huge thank you to all families who consistently send balanced and healthy snacks to school. As the weather is getting warmer, students are now eating indoors at lunch time and we have seen an alarming amount of unhealthy food – which could be a contributing factor to the extremely high spirits we have seen this week? PLEASE HELP US to make sure students are ready to listen, learn, and follow instructions by ensuring that snacks and lunch are healthy and balanced. Candy, coffee and energy drinks should not be brought to school, and if seen, will be taken from the students and sent home with them at the end of the day. We want everyone to have a great finish to Grade 5 as we enter the final term, and we thank you for your understanding.
