Dear families of KG1 students,

It was lovely to see everyone back after the Eid break. We hope you all had an enjoyable holiday!

This week, we explored the final ‘Key to Happiness’: Meaning – being part of something bigger. We talked about simple ways we can help make the world a better place, such as helping someone carry something or picking up litter when we see it at school or at home. We also took this opportunity to consider what is truly important in our lives. To do this, we gave the children a selection of images and, in pairs, asked them to use a Venn diagram to sort the pictures into categories: important, not important, and not sure/a little bit important. We were pleased (and impressed!) to see that all the children placed family, friends, healthy food, and love in the “important” circle. Interestingly, candy and chocolate were voted “not important” (even if they are fun to eat!), while most children agreed that toys were “a little bit important.”

In mathematics, we introduced the language of weight: heavy/light, heavier/lighter, and balanced. We read the book Balancing Act, in which animals climb onto each side of a seesaw, tipping it up and down. This led to a discussion about why one side goes down—some children noticed it was because an object was “bigger” or because another animal got on. We connected this to real-life examples, like what happens when we lift a heavy bag or a big pile of books—our arms go down! The children then explored this idea further using simple balance scales and a set of identical boxes, each containing different objects. They were excited to compare items, figure out which side was heavier or lighter, and take on the challenge of getting both sides to balance. You can see some photos of their learning in action below.

A reminder that swimming has now come to an end, and that instead of swimming on Tuesdays, the children will have PE.

Wishing you all a good weekend. Kind regards,

Kristina, Rahma and Buthaina
