A very engaging and focused week in Grade 6 as we really spend time focusing on our stand a lone literacy and mathematics work. Even though it has been shorter weeks during Ramadan, the actually class time that I have had with the students has been almost the same, so we have been able to make very good progress.
In Literacy we have been studying different explanation texts, recognising the features, formulating keys and then starting to draft our own explanation texts to inform about ‘How Energy is Transferred on a Roller Coaster’. We have also been looking at how we can use AI as a revising buddy to check features, tense and different writing elements in our explanation texts. AI is going to become an increasingly big element of our lives, so I believe that it is vital that students are given opportunities to interact with it responsibly,
In Mathematics we have been creating clear definitions for perimeter and area of compound shapes. We have been learning rules, calculating missing lengths, finding perimeters of irregular shapes and then using rules to calculate the area of tricky compound shapes (such as below).
This Week’s highlight, though, was getting involved with World Mathematics Day, visiting the Mazoon and playing, learning and developing lots of new mathematical skills.
Next week (after the break)
Unit of Inquiry – we need boxes like below for our next experiment, please send in any that you have at home.
- Studying the concept of a Vortex
- Building Vortex Cannons
- Testin Vortex Cannons
Literacy
- Revising and editing our first explanation drafts
- Using AI to check specific features and criteria of our drafts
- Book Clubs
Mathematics
- Looking at volume and capacity of a variety of shapes and objects
- Calculating accurately and using the correct units of measurement
Trip Update
The decision has been made that the trip WILL go ahead. I know many of you have debated over whether you would like your child to attend, and I completely respect whatever choice you have made. It does look like we have the majority of the class signed up though, so we will finalise the buses and prepare for what will hopefully be as very memorable trip on the 9th/10th April. Please ensure (if you have not already) that the permission form is returned to me and that payment is made to ABIS.
Have a relaxing week and I look forward to seeing your children on Sunday, 6th April.
