We are really looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible at our ABIS Community Iftar on Wednesday! What a great opportunity for us to all come together and share this fast-breaking meal which is such an important event during the holy month of Ramadan. Kindly bring a plate of food to share with everyone.
In Maths, students investigated the properties of circles, they looked at labelling the different parts of a circle, and practiced drawing circles using a compass. They then had fun creating different types of Circle Art of their choice. The week ended with some exposure to the formulas used for circles to measure diameter, circumference, and area. For many it was the first time for them to learn about the special number of PI π rounded to 2 decimal places (3.14). They learned that it has its own symbol because it is an irregular number that goes on forever!
In UOI students started their own inquiries which began with them choosing a biome they were interested in and listing what they already knew about it and what they wondered. This led them to picking an animal within their biome and creating a food chain for the animal with labels of producers, consumers, and decomposers. Together we looked at how to make questions around the specified concepts of function, connection and causation which are our focus for the unit. Students took question starters and crafted two which they will go on to answer. We began a little bit of this research but will continue next week.
In literacy we focused on writing meaningful poetry and revisiting types of poems we have done in the past such as acrostic, haiku and free verse. Then students were introduced to a new type of poetry called kennings, which involved 5 sets of nouns hyphenated with either a noun or verb that we used to describe their chosen animals from their UOI inquiries.

Looking Forward:
Next week in maths, students will be exploring the properties of 3D shapes and creating their own using 3D nets to fully understand the concept of 2D and 3D. In Literacy we will continue to explore, share, read, and write different forms of poetry. We will particularly be focussing on diamante poems and concrete poems. In UOI students will continue to answer their questions and then we will begin to look at our organise and generalise section which is where students will list the facts that they learnt through this process and then list what they now understand from their research.
Best wishes, Grade 5 Team!
