It is always an exciting week when schedules have changed for second graders. The Ramadan class schedule began this week and will continue for the month of March. Please be aware that during Ramadan there are no swimming classes. Two changes to be notes are that Art is now on Monday and PE is now on Tuesday.
During our Unit of Inquiry, ‘Sharing the Planet’ so far we have defined habitats and food chains. Our vocabulary packets will consist of five words for this unit. Those words are habitat, food chain, producers, consumers, and predators. Students are researching their chosen animals for their flip books that will begin to take shape late next week. Information they have been researching is their animal’s habitat, location, diet, size, weight, lifespan, protection from predators, and the animal’s needs and wants. Please ask your child what animal they have chosen and what they have learned about their animal.
For English we began morning journal writing for fifteen minutes each day. The students are working on their writing skills daily. We are looking at capitalization, full stops, questions marks, finger spacing, and details. During 6+1 Traits of Writing we have really been focusing on details. The goal is our second grade students begin to step away from simple sentences into more complex sentences, full of details. I tell my students I want to read your work and see a picture in my head. During phonics the suffixes -s and -es have been introduced. These suffixes make words into plurals, more than one.
In math we completed review, review, review about measuring length and mass. For length we practiced using rulers, looking at centimeters and millimeters. Students looked at kilograms and grams and what objectives would be weighed in those standard units when practicing mass.
Next week we will continue working on our animal research. For writing we will be looking at topics and details sentences. In phonics I will introduce the suffixes -er and -est. Students will understand their meaning and how we can use them in sentences. For reading comprehension we will reading informational texts about animals and answering questions about those texts. For math we will review place value and adding double digit numbers. Subtraction and measuring volume will be introduced to the students.
