What an amazing week of learning in Grade 5!
In UOI we developed our critical thinking skills to determine what might happen if we take away a living thing from the food chain. Students did really well at completing cause and effect graphic organisers that ended with them thinking about the final effect on the ecosystem or the biodiversity. Students now understand that all parts of the food chain are needed for a balanced ecosystem and if one goes missing, it becomes unbalanced and other parts of the food chain are affected. We also looked at both the positive and negative ways humans can impact an ecosystem.
In literacy we focused on the different parts in poetry such as stanza, line, rhymes, and rhyme scheme. We also began to explore different figurative language, really focussing on similes, metaphors and personification.
In Maths, students focused on learning about the six different types of triangles; scalene, isosceles, equilateral, acute, obtuse and right. Students did several activities with this including becoming human triangles, and also finding the missing angle inside each triangle as they now know that all the angles add up to 180 degrees. We also started looking at coordinate planes and being able to plot points along the X-axis and Y-axis.
We also got the chance to see and support Grade 6 on Wednesday at their exhibition. Students asked thoughtful questions about their process and took in some ideas and a better understanding of what they will be going through next year for their exhibition.

Upcoming Dates:
- Sunday 2nd – Thursday 6th March – SCHOOL CLOSED – Term Break
- Sunday 9th March – Return to school – Ramadan timetable – See Seesaw
Looking Forward:
When we return from our break, students will be ready to start their own mini inquiry into a biome and ecosystem. In literacy we will continue to develop their skills in writing different figurative language, and looking into different types of poems. In maths we will continue with coordinate planes as well as introduce students to the properties of a circle.
Wishing you a wonderful and relaxing holiday, and we can’t wait to see everyone back at school on Sunday, 9th March.
Warm wishes, Grade 5 Team!
