It was such a positive experience to meet with so many of you at the Parent Teacher Conferences and to celebrate the growth and development our students have made this year so far. Thank you for taking the time to come and meet with me, and remember you can contact me any time.

Upcoming Dates:

  • Thursday 6th February – Grades 3-6 Assembly 12:20-1:00
  • Monday 10th – Wednesday 12th February – Grade 5 Muscat Trip
  • Thursday 20th February – ABIS International Food Festival

As we come to the end of our Where We Are In Place and Time unit of inquiry, we are wrapping up on our personal space inquiries by finishing research and summaries. We are also starting to generalise what we have learnt by brainstorming all the important words for the unit and creating an eight word headline of the big idea. Through our end of unit reflection, students reflected on their research and inquiry skills as well as thinking about challenges that they faced during their research. In maths we are also wrapping up this unit and this week focused on reviewing division, learning about prime and composite numbers as well as understanding the order of operations using GEMS (groupings, exponents, multiply/divide, and subtract/add). In literacy, students were hard at work typing their stories as well as editing and revising. We worked on grammar, punctuation and adding more details.

Looking Forward:

In Maths we will have a quick review before our ‘show us what you’ve learnt’ to see their progress before moving onto our next unit, Shape and Space, which will focus on 2D & 3D shapes, properties of circles, and geometric concepts. In literacy we will be starting our next literacy unit which will focus on poetry. Our new unit of inquiry will kick off, Sharing The Planet, which will focus on the central idea; sustainable biodiversity relies on maintaining the balance within ecosystems. A new unit flyer to include more information about all the new units will be sent next week.

Have a great long weekend everyone. Best wishes, Grade 5 Team.
