It has been an exciting week here in Grade 5! Thank you for taking the time to come to our first Celebration of Learning this year. It was wonderful to see how confident students were able to explain their understanding of forces and simple machines through their Rube Goldberg Machines.
The Winter Concert on Wednesday was a wonderful way to come together, recognising the diverse talents of all our students here at ABIS!
The week ended with a wonderful assembly with students having the opportunity to learn all about service dogs.

This week, students started to engage with our new unit of inquiry, Where We Are in Place and Time, focusing on how curiosity adds to our understanding of our place in the universe. Students completed a visible thinking routine, ‘Think – what does this make you think about?, Puzzle – what puzzles or questions does it make you think of?, Explore – what curiosities do you want to explore?’ based around two videos, Zoom and the Power of 10. This was a great way to see students’ initial understanding of space and gather their wonderings or interests involving space. Please check out our new unit overview on Seesaw and here!
In maths, we began our multiplication and division unit with a ‘Show us what you know’ to see what students already know about exponents, multiplication and division within 100 (times tables to 12), and multiplication and division of multi-digit numbers. We also looked to see students’ understanding of maths vocabulary such as prime and composite numbers, factor pairs, square roots, exponents, and estimation. This information will help to inform us where to go next and to differentiate for students.
Check out more pictures from this week here.
Looking forward to next week:
We will continue to engage students in our first line of inquiry, how our solar system affects life on Earth; focusing on the elements of our solar system. Students will be having a Solar System Scavenger Hunt, then looking deeper into the Earth, Moon and Sun rotation. In Literacy we will start to explore the elements of fiction stories as students will be writing their own science fiction stories during this unit. In maths we will start to explore the standard algorithm for solving multiplication problems, and finding out what other strategies can be used.
We wish everyone a restful weekend ahead of next week’s MOE Exams for our native Arabic speakers.
Best wishes, Miss Rachel & The Grade 5 Team
