This week the Grade 5 learning space turned into a full blown construction site as students worked in their pairs to create and build their Rube Goldberg machines. Initial plans were often revised as students used critical thinking skills to assess whether their original plans were viable. There was a lot of problem solving taking place, along with using their communication skills to share thoughts and ideas, and at times some conflict resolution strategies were used to overcome differences in opinions. All valuable life skills that will hopefully stay with them well beyond Grade 5. There has been a lot of innovation, and adaptations made to a number of materials, to ensure that the Rube Goldberg machines are actually focused on solving the problem that they were created for.
We look forward to showcasing these skills at our Learning Celebration on Sunday and really look forward to seeing as many of you as possible to learn about, and celebrate, the finished projects!
Our reading stations continued with students taking place in a guided reading group, developing comprehension skills through Read Theory, and strengthening spelling strategies and sound recognition through some Words Their Way activities. Some groups were also independently showing off their writing skills with a spot of creative writing from the Choice Board.
In maths our measurement unit came to an end, as we looked at angles, time, and concluded with a ‘Show What You Know’ informal assessment. Every single student showed significant growth in their knowledge of measurement from the initial pre-assessment, so a huge well done to everyone!

Looking forward to next week:
We look forward to welcoming you all to our Learning Celebration on Sunday 1st December! There will also be a rehearsal for our Primary Winter Concert which will be taking place on Wednesday 4th December. (Dress Code is black & white.)
We will be starting a brand new Unit of Inquiry under the transdisciplinary theme of ‘Where We Are in Place and Time, focusing on curiosity adds to our understanding of our place in the universe. In this unit, students will explore how technological advancements throughout history have deepened our understanding of Earth and space, investigate the impact of our solar system on life on Earth, and consider the possibilities and implications of future space exploration. I promise you, it will be out of this world!
In Maths, we will focus on understanding and applying number operations to solve problems and recognise patterns in mathematics. This unit will primarily emphasise multiplication and division, moving beyond the 12 times table to explore various strategies for solving multi-digit multiplication and division problems. In literacy Reading Stations will continue, and we will be starting to explore the features of fiction writing as we look ahead to writing our own fiction stories as part of our new unit of inquiry.
Have a wonderful weekend! Best wishes,
Miss Rachel & The Grade 5 Team
