We wrapped up our Maths unit on measurement by having our Potato Olympic Closing Ceremony last week, recognising our top athletes and all athletes for their participation. We explored a bit more into time conversions from a 12-hour clock and a 24-hour clock, and looked deeper into measuring angles. Students had an informal ‘Show Me What You’ve Learnt’ assessment where they applied all their knowledge gained in all areas of measurement. Each and every child has shown growth and progress from the initial pre-assessment, so well done!
In UOI and literacy, students worked through the stages of the design cycle to apply their knowledge of forces and simple machines in their game designs. Students showed creativity through making their game and remembering which forces and simple machines would be beneficial in the game. We ended the week focusing on writing clear instructions to ensure our players understood the aim of the game and exactly how to play. We also focused on the ‘evaluating’ stage where students played their games with others to ‘test it out’ and see what went well, and what could be improved. Then, they took that feedback and went back to change and recreate, whether on their physical game or improving their instructions.

Looking forward to next week:
Again, we hope that you can make it to our first Celebration of Learning this year on Sunday 1 December from 2:00-3:00pm in the Grade 5 area. It will be a great time for families to see how students applied their knowledge of forces and simple machines to create games.
Students will be engaging into our next unit of inquiry, Where We Are In Place and Time, focusing on curiosity adds to our understanding of our place in the universe. In this unit, students will explore how technological advancements throughout history have deepened our understanding of Earth and space, investigate the impact of our solar system on life on Earth, and consider the possibilities and implications of future space exploration. This sounds like an exciting unit and I am excited to dive in!
In Maths, we will focus on understanding and applying number operations to solve problems and recognise patterns in mathematics. This unit will primarily emphasise multiplication and division, moving beyond the 12 times table to explore various strategies for solving multi-digit multiplication and division problems.
Have a wonderful weekend! Best wishes,
Grade 5 Team
