5M had an amazing week with lots of learning in different areas. We focused on our social-emotional learning as we celebrated Anti-Bullying week. On Wednesday, students celebrated World Kindness Day by writing a kind note to one of their classmates. These helped to lift up students and to show how much a little bit of kindness makes a difference. We talked about how important it is to be kind everyday!

Things to note:

  • Students have been asked to make/create a flag for the country that their athlete is representing, ready for the Closing Ceremony which will take place on Monday morning. They can paint, draw, sew or any other way they can think of to create their own flag.
  • Omani National Day Assembly 8am on Monday 18th November. Students can come to school in Omani National Dress or wearing the colours of the Omani flag, white, red and green.
  • Tuesday is our field trip to the port to look at simple machines and forces in action. We will be back for lunch. Please remember to send your child to school with:
    • Water bottle
    • Sneakers/trainers (closed shoes)
    • A hat
    • Snack
  • There are public holidays on Wednesday 20th November  and Thursday 21st November, school will be closed. Enjoy the long weekend!

This week, students’ and their athletes competed in a Diving event during maths, trying to make the biggest splash! Students began by finding the capacity of their ‘pool’, the smaller container that held the water in which their athlete would dive into. They did this by using a measuring cup and recording each amount of water they put into the ‘pool’ until it got to the very top. They then added up all the amounts, getting over 1 litre! One coach held the metre stick, and then the other coach held their potato at that mark and dropped into the water. The water that splashed into the bigger container was then put into a measuring cup to calculate how big their splash was. Our biggest splash was 750mL by Ali’s athlete, Mohammed. It was great to see students’ learning how to accurately measure using a measuring cup and applying what they know about capacity to a real life situation.

In UOI and Writing we focussed on using transition words, imperative verbs, and adverbs within a science report in order to be specific with our procedure. Students did this through several activities which included finding these different types of words within an exemplar report, and taking a pre-made procedure and re-writing it to be even better. We also reviewed different types of forces and simple machines and started thinking about board games that include these aspects within.

Our Literacy Stations are helping students to develop key reading and writing skills. The main focus continues to be comprehension of the story, as well as reading fluency. During these stations, students are looking at the meaning of unfamiliar words using context clues, as well as looking at different tenses of words that they might already know, such as ‘ran’ versus ‘run’ or ‘came’ versus ‘come’. Students enjoyed visiting the book fair and finding new and exciting books that they are interested in at their level.

Looking forward to next week: In UOI, students will begin the design cycle of their games. They will start with Investigate: What is it you want to design and why? How does it connect to our world?; then Design: Why did you choose this design? How are forces included in your design? How are simple machines included in your design?; after they will Create: first making and labelling a diagram and then creating; and lastly they will Evaluate: Try it out! What went well? What needs to be changed? Make the changes. For their designs, students will use recycled materials. In Literacy, we will continue to focus on procedural writing but instead of science reports, students will focus on creating the rules to their game as well as how to play instructions.

Please help support our students by donating/bringing in any recyclable materials, these are much appreciated!

Kind regards, Grade 5 Team
