Another busy week in Grade 5R! Anti-Bullying Week, Odd Sock Day, Kindness Day, AND a great Book Fair!
Some things to note:
- Students have been asked to make/create a flag for the country that their athlete is representing, ready for the Closing Ceremony which will take place on Monday morning. They can paint, draw, sew or any other way they can think of to create their own flag.
- Tuesday is our field trip to the port to look at simple machines and forces in action. We will be back for lunch. Please remember to send your child to school with:
- Water bottle
- Sneakers/trainers (closed shoes)
- A hat
- Snack
- Omani National Day Assembly 8am on Monday 18th November. Students can come to school in Omani National Dress or wearing the colours of the Omani flag, white, red and green.
- There are public holidays on Wednesday 20th November and Thursday 21st November, school will be closed. Enjoy the long weekend!
This week our students became scientists, and authors, as they used the Scientific Method to figure out if the distance between dominoes affects how fast they fall. They then identified the different variables within the experiment by thinking about:
- What is changing? (independent variable)
- What are we measuring? (dependent variable)
- What is staying the same? (controlled variable)
Our scientists conducted their experiment, recording their results using a table. Then it was time to switch into author mode to write up their individual Scientific Reports.
In literacy, students focused on transition words or sequencing words to use within procedures, and also within their narrative writing as well. Students were able to understand the importance of these words and how they help to keep information organised. Our Reading Stations are helping students to develop key reading and writing skills. During these stations, students are looking beyond just reading the words in the book, but how to really interact with all of the information the book holds. Students also enjoyed visiting the book fair and finding new and exciting books.
This week in maths, students did a deeper dive into volume and capacity in relation to liquids, ahead of next week’s final event in The Potato Olympics 2024 – Diving! Students now understand that volume and capacity relates to liquids and solids (but that we will focus on liquids for now) and we can use millilitres and litres for our units. They also learned how to convert between these units.

Looking forward to next week:
Next week will see the final event in The Potato Olympics 2024 – Diving! The Closing Ceremony will also be held to congratulate all athletes on competing in the events, and to celebrate the victors. The classroom area will start to become a construction zone as students think about, and plan their Rube Goldberg machines. Final drafts of the Scientific Reports will be completed along with accurate diagrams, and National Day will be celebrated before a much welcomed long weekend.
Enjoy! Best wishes,
Grade 5 Team
