Thank you everyone for your amazing flexibility during the move to online learning this week. Our students proved that they were thinkers, by managing to troubleshoot any IT problems, and they showed great self-management skills by being able to engage in the online tasks that were set for them. Great job Grade 5!
In UOI this week, students went off on a Scavenger Hunt to find real life examples of forces and simple machines around the school. Not only did they have to find them, but they had to explain why this was an example. We enjoyed sharing some of the things that had been found. They also watched a BrainPop video all about forces, and did a quiz to show their understanding. On Seesaw students completed an exercise where they made connections to real life forces in everyday life, and found their own example.
In maths, the ABIS Potato Olympics continued, with some potato breakdancing and a gymnastics event. Students used their maths skills to time the event, then they had to round and compare decimals to find their best times. Students also started to explore perimeter, area and volume through a variety of Seesaw tasks and some even got creative as they had to build their own Perimeter & Area city, using 3D items they found at home.
In Literacy, we continued our inquiry into procedural texts as students identified the relationship between verbs and adverbs. They were challenged to write their own simple instructions, and you may also have seen some paper airplanes flying around Sohar from Miss Megan’s class!

Looking Forward to NEXT WEEK:
We will be continuing to explore the central idea that ‘Scientific understanding of force and motion facilitates problem solving.’ Students will be using their creativity in a series of scientific experiments, identifying forces and learning how to record their findings. In language the focus will be on writing scientific reports, exploring different elements such as hypothesis, controlled and uncontrolled variables, and finding out how to record and analyse their observations and data, before drawing conclusions.
In maths we will be continuing with The Grade 5 Potato Olympics, using a range of measuring tools and units of measure. We will be diving deeper into the relationship between perimeter, area, and volume.
