This week has been an exciting week in Grade 5 as we start our new unit of inquiry, How The World Works, as well as our new maths unit on measurement. Students did a word study into different measurement words; perimeter, area, capacity, volume, circumference, and angle to front load the vocabulary needed. Students translated the words, found a definition using a maths dictionary, and drew a picture to represent it. We also started the first ABIS Potato Olympics! This will be an engaging and interactive way for students to learn about and practise different measurement skills but through an inquiry of Olympic events. We started off by introducing students to their athlete (potato), and students found the weight, height and circumference of their athlete, focusing on accurately using a tape measure and ruler as well as understanding how to use a scale. Students are beginning to understand that we use different units for weight and length. Students complete their Athlete Profile with all of this information on Seesaw, be sure to go check it out!
In UOI, Students demonstrated what they already knew about ‘force’, ‘motion’ and ‘simple machines’ using a mind map to represent their knowledge, and then added more to it after watching a few videos that gave them more information about these concepts. Students inquired into different types of forces by watching videos to gather a definition and different examples. They shared these with the class including the translation and showing a physical example of each. We focused on normal force, frictional force, gravitational force, spring force, magnetic force and applied force.
In Literacy, students showed their understanding of procedural texts by writing their own procedure on how to make a sandwich. Through an interactive activity, students were able to identify what good instructions need in order to be useful.
Looking forward in literacy we will be continuing to explore imperative verbs and adverbs that are crucial within procedures. In UOI, we will continue to explore different forces through science experiments as well as simple machines. In Maths, we are looking forward to a few Olympic Events such as Dancing to focus on more areas of measurement.
Have an awesome weekend! Grade 5 Team
