This week we have really enjoyed sharing our Shoebox Autobiographies and finding out more about each other. All the students were very excited to share what they had brought which represented themselves. Today, we practised using Seesaw to take photos of our Shoeboxes and our reflections so please have a look out for those.

Maths this week has focussed on building our mental maths skills, such as estimating, identifying patterns, addition and wondering to generate questions. We have played some addition games to review and consolidate our understanding, orally presented number bonds to 20 and used number lines to add from an initial number. We also used our class names to generate tally charts and identified the various lengths of our class names.

Our writing this week has concentrated on retelling fables. Most of the students have completed their ‘Lion and the Mouse’ storyboard and their ‘The Boy Who Cried Wolf’ story map. Many students have added either sentences to describe action or speech bubbles to describe dialogue. We have begun working on our phonics and spelling beginning with 2 to 4 letter words. Handwriting practise has also begun to develop our find motor skills and a neater form of writing.

We have continued to read fables, in real life and online. As we have read we have talked about the settings, characters, problems and solutions; especially, focussing on the moral or lesson of each fable.

Next week, we will begin working on grouping objects: A collection of objects can be put into equal groups of 2s, 5s, and 10s. We will continue with our maths talks which include using mental maths to solve problems, discussing the strategies we might use to solve problems and asking questions about the maths we are learning.

In literacy, we will continue to practise our handwriting skills and build our understanding of phonics and spelling in English through directed lessons, Nessy and guided reading sessions. Fable reading will be our main reading focus to identify the structure of these stories. We will also be introduced to whole class, small group and individual reading practices in Grade 2.

We will be wrapping up our unit of inquiry: Who we are by reflecting on what we have learned over the past few weeks about ourselves and our cultures.
