Exciting news for our Grade 5 students as we plan to have our first field trip of the year! On Tuesday 1st October, as part of our educational programme, the Grade 5 students will be participating in an educational experience outside of the classroom. This will be linked to our current unit of inquiry: “Who We Are”. We will be visiting the community of Fizah to learn about the structure of the community, talk with the Sheikh and to visit the Fort. Letters have been sent home with students today. Please sign the consent form at the bottom of the letter, and cut and return THE BOTTOM PART ONLY!

This short week has been jam packed full of learning and activities!

On our first day back we celebrated International Dot Day, a global celebration of creativity, courage and collaboration. We reminded ourselves about Peter H. Reynolds’ book The Dot, as we listened to a read aloud. Students will be bringing their Dot Dat creations home today, so ask them if they can tell you what the story was about.

We spent an afternoon in Mazoon building our community in Grade 5, by trying out some activities that pushed some of our students out of their comfort zones. It had a very positive outcome however, as students realised that by being risk takers, and putting their own personal feelings aside for the good of the team, they ended up forgetting all about their fears, and having lots of fun with their team! Great work Grade 5 students.

In maths this week we continued to learn about ‘The Story of 1’, and the history behind the base ten number system that we use today. Students also had a chance to explore some of the ancient number systems they had learned about such as: Roman numerals, the ancient Egyptian hieroglyph numbering system, Mayan numbers, and ancient Greek number systems. We also had some activities that involved number partitioning by place value, and practising number knowledge skills chosen to suit our own ability! (Goldilocks – not too hard, not too easy, just right!)

Every student did a personal inquiry into a child activist through reading a short biography. After reading, students reflected using the following questions:

  • What problems did the activist face?
  • Do YOU think this relates to: survival,  protection, development, or participation?
  • What actions did they take to address the problem?

Students are now choosing the influential person that they want to write their biography about, ask them who they chose!

Next week: in maths we will be reading and writing decimals to thousandths using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. As writers, we will be looking at the different skills and materials we will need to research, note take and draft our biographies. As inquirers, we will be learning/being reminded of the difference between asking open or closed questions during research. Students will also be creating their own open questions about our Unit of Inquiry.

A reminder that Grade 5 Students MUST:

  • BRING THEIR IPADS, WATER BOTTLE, HAT & HEADPHONES EVERY DAY!!!! (If possible, your child should bring a hat and headphones to leave at school with their names on it.)

If you want to check out more photos from the week, please see them here: Week 4

Have a great weekend!

Best wishes,

Team G5
