The students in Grade 2 are beginning to settle into their routines and getting to know the timetable. New students to ABIS are making friends and exploring our learning spaces. It’s been a very busy week, introducing ourselves to each other, figuring out how to work in teams and how we can best use our time at school

We created our essential agreements for how we work in our learning spaces after a big discussion on ABIS’s Code of Conduct: Respect Yourself, Respect Ourselves and Respect the Environment. The students were all very engaged and offered great suggestions on how they could work to take advantage of learning opportunities.

You should have already received an invitation to Seesaw where you will be able to observe your child’s learning journey. Once we are up and running with the curriculum, you will see regular updates from your child about what they are working on at school. This is also a place where you can send me a message. One great advantage of using Seesaw to send a message is that it will translate messages to and from a variety of languages.

Today, each student was given an iPad to use in class (there were some technical glitches which are being worked on) and they practised using our spelling and reading programme: Nessy. The students will be using this programme regularly throughout the year to support their literacy. We will also be using RAZKids and Epic in class to support our reading and writing programmes.

Thank you to all those parents who have already provided headphones for their child. Each student will need headphones which can be left at school as they are used everyday. We ask that you provide headphones that use an audio plug and not the wireless versions. As we have discovered today, most of the students do not know how to connect their headphones to an iPad via Bluetooth, nor do they have equipment with which to charge their headphones. At school, we have limited plugs and time in which to ensure your child has a charged wireless set.

Every Thursday, a student will be able to share with their classmates through a Show and Tell session. Two students per week will be chosen to share; they will be given a sheet to complete which supports this sharing.

Please send a hat to school with your child. The students are playing outside during morning break and they will also use them when walking between specialist lessons. Once the weather cools down, the students will be outside for both morning and lunch break and will need to keep their head covered. It is always a good idea to apply sunscreen to protect sensitive skin.

For any items your child does bring to school, it’s a good idea to label the clothing, water bottle, headphones and bags so we know which item belongs to which student. It’s always sad to see so many items end up in the lost and found.

Swimming for 2SB will begin next week on Monday, 4th September. Please see the email sent from the PE department about what items your child will need to bring for swimming.

Your child will be excited to share their birthday with their friends at school and we are happy for you to send in mini-cakes/cupcakes. Please note we promote sustainability at ABIS, therefore, we ask that if you do send in plates or cutlery that they are able to be recycled, so bamboo, paper or wood products would be best.
