It has been an amazing week welcoming students to Grade 5, seeing old friendships come to light and new friendships starting to blossom! Grade 5 students spent this week learning more about each other through various activities.

The compass point activity had students being thinkers and risk-takers as they wrote down what they need to know about grade 5, what they are excited about, what suggestions they have for grade 5 and what worries them about grade 5. This led us into our next activity of what learning in grade 5 should look like, sound like, and feel like; as well as what helps me learn. By using the answers to these questions, students were able to come up with essential agreements that we should have and agree in order to make learning the best it can be.

We were able to refine these to just 5 essential agreements as follows:

-Include everyone & listen to everyone

-Keep our space clean & 3Rs

-Have voice, choice & ownership

-Have fun!

Students created their own self portraits which included half of their face being things that they like and half of their face being a true self-portrait. Grade 5 students were able to find connections with their classmates.

Next week, we look forward to continuing getting to know one another and their learning styles as we launch into our Who We Are unit of inquiry with some engaging activities. To get to know students as learners we will be conducting some baseline assessments in maths problem solving skills, reading, and spelling.
