“UNLESS someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” A famous quote from Dr Seuss’s book: The Lorax. Grade 5 listened to the story of The Lorax, which was published By Dr Seuss over 50 years ago, but has an environmental message for mankind, which is more important than ever as we see ecosystems being destroyed, and so many species of animals who are facing extinction at the hands of human consumption.

In UOI this week students were creating and adding information about their chosen endangered animal to their website. They wrote in their own words about the animal they had chosen using information gathered from a variety of sources. They also drew/created diagrams of: their animal, the life cycle of their animal, and the food web connected to their animal.

In English, students listened to the story of The Lorax, which is mostly written using rhyming couplets. They were then tasked with creating their own rhyming couplets in groups and individually, which some of our students excelled at! Future poets in Grade 5 for sure! They also had the opportunity to create a shape/concrete poem about any topic they wanted. Remember you will be able to see ALL of the poems when students share their websites with you at the Student Led Conferences on 23rd & 24th April.

In maths this week, students were pranked on April Fool’s Day by Miss Rachel! They were put into groups and tasked with solving some unsolvable maths word problems. There was a lot of confusion, but none of the students realised it was a prank until the reveal. Gotcha! Students also had hands on experience of drawing 3D shapes and calculating volume this week. We are all different as learners, and some found the tasks easy, while the concept of drawing 3D shapes proved harder for others. Some found they could calculate volume easily without the actual blocks, and others needed to see the blocks to understand the concept of volume. We saw risk-takers, thinkers and knowledgeable students this week as we came to the end of our unit on measurement, perimeter, area and volume. Students will be revising this weekend as they have an end of unit assessment which will take place on Sunday.

At ABIS we are asking all families to support the community as we collect any new/second hand books that we can donate to Takaful. Takaful will be selling these books at their 4th annual Charity Exhibition and all of the monies raised will go to support families and orphans. The drive will continue until 30th April, and we thank you so much in advance. Let’s show the community that ABIS cares!

We wish you all a restful weekend as we look forward to the Eid holidays starting on Tuesday 9th April next week. Best wishes, Miss Rachel & Ms Khadija
