In grade 2 this week we have been working on building our reading fluency and expression by reading voraciously. The students have practised this independently and with partners. in writing, we have been working on our tiger research reports, identifying what that are, what they can do and how they live. We are learning how to located and use information from non-fiction books.
In maths, we have been estimating distances and then finding the actual measurements so that we can become better at estimating. It encourages children to have a good understanding of the magnitude of numbers rather than overly relying on mathematical procedures to achieve an answer. We have also been comparing 10cm, 20cm and 50cm to 1 metre to see how they can be added together to make 100 cm. This has been a great investigation to build that knowledge that varying lengths, when added together, can equal a total length.
Our UOI this week has been focused on our tiger research and also on animal classification. Our visit to the farm yesterday was such a wonderful learning experience for all of us. The farm we visited had several types of plants which grow fruits that are harvested and sold at market, there were also a variety of farm animal to see. We found out that banana trees need a lot of water and that once they produce a bunch of bananas, the tree then dies. It was news to us that that a papaya tree also has only one harvest during its lifetime. We ate dates produced on the farm.
This morning, I asked who had begun their diorama and about 5 students raised their hands. The diorama and the research paper are due on Sunday, 10th December. We, once again, reviewed the expectations, instructions and watched the video. Please support your child’s home learning by providing time for them to collect materials and work on their diorama over the weekend. Please try to use resources that are already in your home.
We hope you enjoyed the concert this morning and are excited to see the musical: ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ next week on Monday, 11th December at 6.00pm.
Enjoy your weekend!
