The building of Rube Goldberg machines has begun in earnest this week! All the teams are learning to work cooperatively, problem solve and show persistence and resilience when things don’t quite go to plan… As well as building these machines, students are learning the importance of teamwork and using their thinking skills to resolve any problems they face as a team. These are skills that we continue to develop throughout our lives, and this is a great opportunity for our Grade 5 students to work together and problem solve together. Every set back is a true learning experience!
In language this week everyone has been focused on writing their own narrative backstory about the problem that their Rube Goldberg machine was created to solve. Students are putting together all of their learning about characters, settings, figurative language and paragraph writing, as they make their way through the writing process. Reading groups have continued looking at the scientific terminology of building machines in non-fiction books, and also the use of figurative language in fiction books. In maths we continued to learn about the addition of decimals using our knowledge of place value.
As we draw closer to the end of 2023, there are so many other things going on in school! Grade 5 had a rehearsal for next week’s Winter concert, and have been practising their athletic skills ahead of the end of year Sports Day!
We wish you all a restful weekend! Team G5
