Bonjour Les Familles et Amies,

Time is flying by.  G4 is settling in, getting accustomed to the pace of the day and the requirements of being a successful 4th grader.  For photos from this week, please see this link.

What We Did in Week 4

  • Math
    • Place value of whole numbers up to 1000 and Beyond – Learning in full swing
      • Recalling the place values: Students solved and created “Mystery Number” activities.  Students are also solving number mysteries by building numbers with manipulatives.  See sample problem below so you can practise similar quiz at home.
    • In the gaming area, + – * card games are still happening to instill basic facts
    • Students are working on creating and matching the three FORMS of number – expanded form, standard form and word form
    • This week’s math vocabulary: digit, placeholder, location, expanded form, standard form, word form. Please encourage your children to talk about these words at home and use them when they are trying to recount/review their learning.

  • Literature and Integrated UOI
    • A writing assessment was given and is being reviewed. Here is a copy of the task. The purpose of the pre-assessment is to inform our teaching as we move forward so we can celebrate their accomplishment so far and focus on the key areas that students need improvement with.
  • The central idea for the unit, “How We Express Ourselves” was rolled out and students brainstormed on the various forms of self-expression.

How you can help at home:

  • Ask your child how to multiply a number by 10 or 100 or 1000. This is something we will emphasize next week to make connection between expanded form, place value columns and multiplication strategy.
  • Please read with your child nightly at least 30 minutes or you could listen to your child read out.
  • Encourage your child to express their thoughts, ideas, knowledge, learning, understanding and feelings in the class during circle time and this includes listening attentively and taking turns.

If you have any questions about this or anything else school related,  please do not hesitate to contact us via email at: a.norman@abisoman.com or s.raghuraman@abisoman.com or s.albalushi@abisoman.com
