When an educational organization—big or small—values creativity, everyone is given the space to dream big.

When culturally, linguistically, and neurologically diverse students construct new knowledge together, most definitely community is being built around including diverse voices as equitably as possible.

When teachers instill the qualities of self-directed learning into a learning community, it is safe to say that the leader(s) of this community value interdependence above all else.

When students demonstrate a growth mindset, knowledge is not an abstract concept but something that has been synthesized through presenting ideas to an audience of peers.

When students succeed after many attempts (and possibly with as many failures), without a doubt many teachers have modeled grit or some important internal dialogue: “I have not reached my goal yet, so I just need to work a little bit harder.”

When teachers and students learn together through systems thinking, such as routines, everyone is participating in each other’s learning and caring enough to challenge all to act.

When teachers plan appropriately challenging performance tasks connected to authentic assessments within trans-disciplinary units of inquiry for a cohort of students, it goes without saying that some exceptional learning is going on.

When educators agree to collaborate for the sole purpose of improving student achievement, it might be that they are analyzing data to direct instruction toward tangible goals.

When people come together because they live to love and love to learn, chances are there is something special going on.
