Dear all,

This week students were able to learn more about energy in our Unit of Inquiry “Sharing the Planet.” Students made solar balloons, and  they saw firsthand how the Sun’s energy can make air molecules expand and cause the solar balloon to rise. We introduced the concepts of potential and kinetic energy as well.

In Math, this week I changed our plan and decided to have Mrs. Ays teach the students the “Box Method” of Multiplication. Students learned a very interesting method of how to multiply 2 by 2 digit numbers. It really forced the students to remember and use their understanding of place value, multiplication, and addition to find the correct answers. Please have the students show you this method. Ask them what is 48 x 26 and tell them to use the box method for multiplication.

Our Reading and Basic Math Skills assessments will be coming up soon. This will be the last assessment for the end of the year to measure student progress and achievement. Please make sure students are doing their Math and Reading homework so they have the additional practice they need to be successful. Encourage students to also be reading on Raz-Kids and Epic at home. Lastly, Homework is due back on Sunday so please make sure students have them completed and ready to turn in on Sunday.

Regards,

Mr. Jaymz
